Water Saving Tips

How you can save water inside & outside our home.

6 Water saving tips for inside the home -

How to save water Inside your home

  1. Turn the vanity basin tap off while you clean your teeth, shave, or soap up to wash your hands. This will save up to 9 litres a minute.

  2. Take only a 4 minute shower. Reducing your shower time from 7 to 4 minutes will save up to 36 litres of water.

  3. Check that your shower rose is a water saving one at 9 litres per minute.

  4. When rinsing dishes or washing fruit, part-fill the sink instead of running the water. A kitchen tap uses about 9 litres a minute.

  5. When updating your house hold appliances like the washing machine or dishwasher, choose a water-efficient one with at least a 4-star WELS Scheme rating or better.

  6. Only wash your clothes when you have a full load.

5 Water saving tips for Outside of your home

  1. Sweep or use a blower on the paved & concreted areas like driveways & footpaths instead of hosing off with water.

  2. Consider planting native trees and shrubs in the garden, as they need less water & attract native wildlife. They also use less fertiliser and pesticides.

  3. Do deep watering to plants only once a week, according to your council’s regulations, to encourage plant roots to grow deeper. The plants will seek water from below rather than close to the surface, reducing watering requirements.

  4. Mulch the garden beds to reduce water loss (which can be up to 70%) through evaporation. Mulch stores water for plants to use and helps to stop weeds from growing.

  5. Set your lawn mower's cutting height to 3 centimeters or higher to avoid cutting your lawn too short. This will reduce the amount of water your grass will need.

Now to check your home for water leaks

A dripping tap can waste more than 200 litres of water per day. If you're waiting for a plumber, use buckets to catch drips and use the water on your plants.

Check plumbing fixtures for drips or leaks. If you find a leak, have it repaired immediately.

Check your water meter for any hidden or concealed water leaks.

Once you have checked that all the inside & outside taps, toilets, hot water system & other plumbing fixtures are not leaking, then we also recommend you check that you now check that your water meter is not moving while no taps or toilets are being used. This is best done when no one is in the home & likely to flush the toilet or use any other water.

How to check your water meter for leaks

Take a picture of the water meter & re take a picture at least 30 minutes later.

Compare the numbers on the water meter, if they are the same, then you do not have a water leak at your home. If the numbers are different, you will need to contact your plumber as you may have a concealed water leak which will need to be located & repaired.
