No Hot Water?

Here are 6 easy causes for No Hot Water

There could be many reasons that you have no hot water.

Firstly we need to ask a few questions to diagnose the problem.
There are many brands & types of hot water systems & many reasons can be the cause of hot water not working.

Do you have an electric, gas or solar hot water system?

If you have en Electric Hot Water System, continue reading this article.

ELECTRIC HOT WATER NOT WORKING - Trouble Shoot

  1. Is your storage tank leaking?

  2. Is it leaking from a pipe, valve or tank?

  3. Check your electric fuse box - Has the switch tripped?

  4. Do you have limited hot water, then it goes cold?

  5. Do you have hot water in some taps, but not all the taps?

  6. How old is your electric hot water tank? There may be a Date of Manufacture (DOM) visible on a label somewhere on the tank.

This is important as storage tanks have an expected life of 10 - 13 years, so if your tank is within this age, it may be best to put the money into a replacement rather than repairs.

You're looking at an outer casing, but inside that casing is insulation, then an inner steel tank. If you have not replaced the sacrificial anode at 5-7 years of age, then the inner steel tank may have rusted & now is leaking into the insulation causing it to swell & burst the outer casing.

If your tank is under 10 -13 years of age, then we may be able to repair it.
If your hot water tank is over 10 -13 years of age, then it may be best to have it replaced at this time.

a) Is your hot water storage tank leaking?

YES - Then you cannot repair this. You need a new hot water tank.

Contact Moyle Plumbing for advice on a new tank. There are new government regulations for the installation of a new hot water tank, and forms need to be submitted to Council (form 4) which also secures the manufacture warranty. If your new hot water tank is not installed by a licensed plumber and a form 4 not submitted, you will not be covered by insurance or warranty.

NO - Then we may be able to repair your hot water not working.

b) Is the water leak coming from a valve?

We recommend you contact Moyle Plumbing for advice on this as your tank has multiple valves that have different functions to keep your tank working well.

If it is leaking hot water, then the TPRV has failed.
Just replacing this valve may not be enough. It may have failed as the inlet water pressure is too high.
A plumber needs to check the water pressure to determine this.

There should be a pressure limiting valve (PLV) installed on the hot water system. It's job is to release pressure during hi-pressure times & when in use. Releasing pressure means that it will leak, which is very normal. Excessive or constant leaking is not normal. This valve needs to be tested.

You may also have a failed CWRV, which means that you may require 1 - 3 new valves.

If you are not familiar with these valves, you may waste money purchasing the wrong valve, only 1 valve, or the incorrect KPA valve & end up with a leaking hot water system or no hot water at all problem again

Contact Moyle Plumbing for advice or cost to have us test & replace these valves for you.

c) Is the hot water leaking from a pipe on the hot water tank?

Yes - This can be repaired.

Repairing a leaking hot water pipe is a fairly simple job for an experienced plumber, but there are things that can go wrong.

Do not attempt to repair this yourself unless you are confident & capable.  We recommend you contact Moyle Plumbing for advice or a price for us to attend and repair for you. You may be surprised at how inexpensive it is for us to do this repair. Our repairs have a 12 month warranty period.

d) Has the fuse tripped in your meter box?

Your electrical meter box should have a fuse especially allocated just for the hot water system.

If this has fused then you may have a problem with the electrics of the hot water system such as the element or thermostat.

DO NOT attempt to repair this your self. Contact your licensed plumber to fix this for you.

Moyle Plumbing has an emergency same day service for this kind of repair.

If you live in our area between Brisbane and the Gold Coast Queensland Australia, contact our office before 11 am and we will prioritize you for same-day emergency service.

Moyle Plumbing has a restricted electrical license to repair hot water systems.

e) Do you have limited hot water, then it goes cold?

This may be a problem with the thermostat or a tempering anti-scalding valve.

We recommend you contact Moyle plumbing to diagnose this and repair it.

f) Do you have hot water in some taps but not all the taps?

This may be a problem with the tap washers, shower rose or a tempering anti-scalding valve installed on the hot water line to this fixture.

If you are confident to check your taps & shower rose, then check & clean out any possible blockages in these fixtures.

If this has not fixed the problem, you may or may not have a tempering device installed on a hot water line. This tempering valve may be hidden under the vanity or even behind the wall.

We recommend you contact your licensed plumber or Moyle Plumbing for advice before you open any walls looking for something that may not be there.
