Only one of the toilets in my home is blocked, what’s the problem?

If you have just one toilet in your home that blocks very easily, then the problem is isolated to this toilet or the branch drain to this toilet.

In recent years we’ve received an increased number of call-outs for blocked toilets isolated to just one toilet in the home. What we have found is that some toilets, but not all, have a common problem that could have been easily eliminated, had the correct toilet or toilet connections been used when the toilet was originally installed.

We’re talking about concealed toilet pans.

Concealed Toilet Pans

Concealed Toilet Pans are a nice, modern-looking & an easy to clean ceramic pan.
You cannot see the pan connections in the floor or wall, as it is hidden under the ceramic pan.
Concealed toilets are a modern toilet, so we see them in new homes or homes that have been renovated.

These toilets are dual flush & water-efficient.
Because these toilets use less water when they flush, blockages from paper and solids can occur, but this is not the main cause of the toilet blockage.
To find the main problem, your plumber needs to lift the toilet off the floor.
Your toilet may be screwed & sealed to the floor & due care needs to be given when undoing the pan screws, as not to crack the pan.

Once the toilet is lifted off the floor, we can see the pan connector.
This is the fitting that seals the toilet to the sewer outlet, either through the floor or the wall.

In an ideal situation, this connection should be straight, with 100% of the 100mm pipe clear to flush solids & paper even with the water-saving flush.

In many situations, we find that an off-set pan connection has had to be used to line these concealed toilet pans up with the sewer outlet. Sometimes it only requires a minimum adjustment of 20%, where other times a 40 – 60% offset connection has been used. The maximum offset pan connector we would recommend is 20mm.

It is this 40-60mm offset that obstructs the outlet, reducing the diameter of the outlet by 40-60%, allowing sewage to get stuck & block your toilet.

Common offset connection sizes are:

  1. 100mm Straight

  2. 20 mm Offset

  3. 40 mm Offset

  4. 60 mm Offset

I have made this short video to give you a visual understanding on this topic of why some toilets block which may help you understand if this is maybe the cause of why your toilet is blocking when flushed.
